He was predeceased by: his wife Ann Marie; his grandson Brian Brown; and his brother Thomas McGrath. He is survived by: his children, Thomas McGrath (Diane), Margaret Brown (Neil) and Kathy Rodriguez (Henry); his sister Mary Ratigan; and also, Cary, Michelle (Stephen), Rachel, Monica McGrath, Jake Brown, Shannon Brown, Alex Rodriguez, Nick Rodriguez (Lisa), Emma, Jessie and Ryan Johnston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the SPCA of Wake County, 200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603 in memory of John "Jack" McGrath.
