He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Mecler; and his sister Louise Bailey. He is survived by: his children, Michael, Edward Jr., Peggy, MaryBeth and Carol. He is also survived by his five children, eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made the Ronald McDonald Houses of Durham and Chapel Hill.
