He was predeceased by: his parents, Arleigh Varner and Lida May Smith Varner; his siblings, Harold Varner, Alan Varner, Raymond Varner, Ellen Phillips and Sarah Closser; his wife Barbara Ullom Varner; and his son-in-law Hugh McCullen.

He is survived by: his children, Dr. Donald R. Varner, Jr. (Nancy), Martha Varner McCullen, Kathryn Varner Gentry (Rick), W. Scott Varner (Laurie) and Jane Varner Branam (Chris); his grandchildren, Dr. Seth McCullen (Ashley), Natalie Ryan (Brad Ryan), Chad McCullen (Kindelle), Dr. Adam Varner (Lindsey), Meredith McCullen (Scott Smith), Jackie Nelsen (Ryan), Taylor Gentry (Michelle), Zach Gentry (Hannah), Christian McCullen (Jessica), William Branam, Caroline Collins (Justin), Dr. Kimberly Varner, Allison Varner, Christina Quinlan (Evan) and Caleb Branam; and his caregivers, John, Roger of Home Instead and Donald. He is also survived by 24 great- grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
