He was loved and cherished by many people including: his spouse Hamsa Unnithan; his sons, Sunil and Sujit; his daughters-in-law, Lipi and Deepti; and his grandchildren, Lila, Akshay and Arya.

In 1967, he was awarded a Ford Foundation scholarship to pursue his doctorate at the School of Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill under the mentorship of Dr. Mindel Sheps.
