He was predeceased by: his parents, Jefferson Joseph (J. J.) and Opal Severe; his siblings, Jefferson Joseph Severe Jr., Jay B Severe and Jean Armstrong; his wives, Verbee Severe and Vivian Winstead; and his stepson Jerry Hazard.

He is survived by: his daughter Debbie Lanagan; his stepchildren, Marie Hamm, Randy Blanton, Tony Blanton and Gail Benton; his grandchildren, Sherri Tadus, Verbee Faucette, Joseph Marino (Celina Marino), James Shepard Jr., Mark Hazard, Marlena Johnson and Mylinda Duncan; and his great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Lanagan, Courtney Simonson and Georgia Tadus. He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and his wife's siblings.
