He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Oscar and Lucy Hargrove Smathers; and his siblings, Cesareen Penland, Eileen Greybow and Frederick H. Smathers.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Lyerly Smathers; and his daughters, Donna Smathers Beebe (Dennis) of Seneca and Tamara Smathers Worley (Stephen) of Canton. He is also survived by five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
