He was predeceased by: his parents, Zebulon Vance Cox, Sr. and Nolie Thomas Cox; and his brother Thomas Lee Cox. He is survived by: his wife Ruby Atkins Cox; his sons, Dexter Ray Cox, Jr. (Michelle) of Concord and Tracey Shane Cox of Sanford; his siblings, Charline McNeill of Carthage and Vance Cox, Jr. of Shallotte, NC; and his grandchildren, Dexter Ray Cox, III (Coty), Kelby, Kayla, Reece, Riley and Bonham.
