He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Norman Stewart and Mary Louise Prosser Stewart; his son Robert Allen Stewart; and his brothers, James "Butch" Stewart, Harold "Skinny" Stewart and Bill Stewart.
He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Blackwelder Stewart; his children, Charles Michael Stewart (Cathy) of Orlando, FL and Sandra Leigh Stewart of Raleigh; his daughter-in-law Martha Stewart Benfield of Salisbury; his granddaughters, Shana Stewart Wall (Aaron) of Elon and Kara Stewart Karns (Gabe) of Columbus, OH; his great grandchildren, Sean Wall, Corey Wall, Jasper Wall, Raelyn Karns and Vera Karns; and his sister-in-law Brenda Stewart of Mebane.
