He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Preston and Phoebe Preston (Brown); his stepdaughter Norma Jean Jackson; and his former wife Viola Preston. He is survived by: his siblings, Henry, George and Josephine; his former wife Mary Stewart; his stepchildren, Dr. Christeen Allen (Patrick), Harold Blake Preston, Bernita Louise Gissler (Hansrudolf) and Ann Renee Mobley (Whitney); his grandchildren, Marc E. Smith (Traci), Marci E. Smith, Melanie A. Cobb, Gil Scott Keyes and Brian C. Phillips; his nephew John D. Harris (Barbara); and his wife Lillie Preston (Boney).
In 2012, these original African American Marines were honored for their contribution to the Marine Corp and to their country when they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
