He was predeceased by: his parents, Ivey Graham and Katie Jones Smith; his daughter Sheri Smith Eubanks; his grandson Zachary Keith Eubanks; and his brother Bob Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Linda Andrews Smith; his children, Jerri Lynn S. McLamb (Travis) of Coats and William Gerald "Bill" Smith, Jr. (Jennifer) of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Leanne Eubanks Cooper (Mitch), Brett Thomas McLamb (Sydney), Parker William Smith, Hillary Batchelor Smith and Blair Francis Smith; his great grandchildren, Bobbi Leigh and J. D. Cooper; and his brother Jimmy Smith (Connie) of Farmville. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
This is the highest honor awarded from the Governor and is reserved for people who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.
