He was predeceased by: his parents, Burlin Hoppes and Fannie Marshall Hoppes; and his siblings, Murriel Hoppes and Grady Hoppes. He is survived by: his wife Diane Porter Hoppes; his daughters, Lora Hoppes Murray (Philip) of Ellenboro, Lynn Hoppes Murray of Bostic, Melinda Hoppes Bishop (Bo) of Rutherfordton and Crystal Hoppes Hamby (Travis) of Gilkey; his brothers, Roy Hoppes (Carolyn) of Bostic and Earl Hoppes (Eunice) of Bostic; his grandchildren, Katie McFarland, Leslie Carpenter (Leon), Lauren Boyd (Aaron), Austin Cole, Emily Yount (Tyler) and Braydin Hamby; and his great grandchildren, Felicity Carpenter, Cooper Boyd and Salem Boyd.

The family suggests that memorials be made in his memory to McDowell County Schools Endowment Fund for Children's Literacy, 334 South Main Street, Marion, North Carolina 28752.
