He is survived by: his wife Shirley Craft; his children, Samual Mark Grainger, Lydia Grainger Powell (Jeff) of Boiling Springs, NC, Robert Cowan, IV (Leslie) of Raleigh, NC, Deborah Grainger Karahalis (Greg) of Huntsville, AL and Ann; his grandchildren, Jacob Grainger Powell, Sarah Caroline Powell, Theadora Lydia Karahalis, Leah Rhiannon Powell, Georgianna Katherine Karahalis, Alexandria Jean, Gabrielle Ann Kovan, Robert Cowan, Samuel Gregory Karahalis and Claire Marie Kovan; his sister-in-law Catherine Dean; his niece Katherine Frances; his nephews, William Milton, Louis Henry and John Phillip Dean; his former wife Sylvia Tripp; and his stepchildren, Joe Hassell, Mitch Hassell and Sam Hassell.
