He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Stines and Doris Searcy Stines; and his grandson James Aaron Phillippi. He is survived by: his wife Joyce Peterson Stines; his children, Stephanie Phillippi of Carrboro and Tracy Stines (Erica) of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Amanda Rae Stines of Chapel Hill, Meghan Tracy Stines of Charlotte, Jason Edward Phillippi (Lori) of Asheville and Andy Phillippi of Carrboro; his great grandchild Leah Phillippi of Carrboro; and his brother Dr. Ernest N. Stines of Canton.
