He was predeceased by: his parents, Christopher Columbus Merritt and Josephine Barr Merritt; his former wife Judith H. Merritt; his son Craig Haywood; his sister-in-law Sue Siler; and his mother-in-law Versie Hickman.
He is survived by: his wife Diane Merritt; his children, Justin Merritt (Misti) of Shelby, Blake Merritt (Jennifer) of Bladenboro, Keith Haywood (Tina) of Lumberton and Jolie Merritt Hathcock (Matt) of Bladenboro; his sisters, Judy Sealey (Glenn) of Lumberton and Cathy Eason (Larry) of Bladenboro; his grandchildren, Brandon Haywood, Misty Bryan, Jenna Hathcock, Lindsay Ventura, Trent Haywood, Levi Haywood, Sydnie Merritt, Campbell Merritt and Braylen Merritt; his great grandchildren, Banks Singletary, Blaise, Arlo, Ellie Haywood, Braxton, Mia, Mateo Ventura, Madison Bryan, Lexi Haywood and Leo Haywood; his close friends, Michael, Stephanie, Haley and Ashton Bryan; and his pet Muffy.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, November 19th 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Galeed Baptist Church (571 Galeed Church Rd, Bladenboro, NC 28320). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, November 19th 2024 at 3:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Tuesday, November 19th 2024 from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery (6414 Center Rd, Bladenboro, NC 28320).
