He was predeceased by: his siblings, Linda Burney and Edward Matheson. He is survived by: his children, Trisha Campbell (Brady) of Sylva, NC, Challie Matheson (Adam) of Chadbourn, Jessica Matheson Blackwell (AP) of Chadbourn and Nathan A. Matheson, Jr. (Brandi) of Evergreen; and his brother Robert Matheson of Chadbourn. He is also survived by 11 Grandchildren and 8 Great-Grandchildren.
