He was predeceased by: his parents, John Brent and Lela Land Mayes; and his sister Betty Lou Mayes. He is survived by: his wife Peggy Hayes Mayes; his stepgrandson Zachary Johnson (Amanda) of Benson; his stepgreat-granddaughters, Mary Scott Johnson and Iva Christine Johnson; and his siblings, Becky Thornton of Four Oaks, Barbara Corey of Robersonville, Shirley Weaver of Raleigh, Margaret Cashwell (J. C.) of Steadman, Don Mayes (Joan) of Princeton and Tom Mayes (Ida) of Clayton. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
