He was predeceased by: his parents, William Melvin and Ruby Mildred Hancock Laye; his wife Shirley; his sister Gail; his brother-in-law Ray Brandenburg; and his grandson Marnzell Hand.
He is survived by: his son Jimmy; his daughter-in-law Sandy Laye of Belmont; his daughters, Deborah Laye of Gastonia, Donna Elaine Laye and Laura Laye Duncan (Stephen) of Rutherfordton; his grandchildren, Chris Adams, Robbie Grahl, Zachary Joyner (Aly), Lauren Gordon (Chapman), Alyssa Laye, Katie Laye, Jamile King (Tim), Elizabeth Scroggs (Marc) and Eric Stevanus; his sister-in-law Bain (Patsy Laye); his brother Steve Laye of Charlotte; and his siblings-in-law, Doris and Charles Greene of Shallotte. He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren; brother.
