He was predeceased by: his parents, Staten Raleigh Clayton and Lillian Margaret Lowe Clayton; his wife Linda Joyce Wilbanks; his grandson Owen Brooks; and his siblings, Ottis Clayton, Jack Clayton, Lesley "Lek" Clayton and Verna Spencer.
He is survived by: his children, Edsel James Clayton, Jr. (Marie) of Ketchikan, AK, Brenda C. Brooks (Charlie) of Pantego, Lillian C. Hurst of Greenville and Staten H. Clayton (Sybil) of Belhaven; his sisters, Alice Miller of Wilmington and Margaret Miller of Newport News, VA; and also Staten. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
