He was predeceased by: his parents, Bradford Nelson and Beulah Nelson; his wife Corinne Nelson; his stepdaughter Rhonda Jordan; and his siblings, Esther Rose, Roma Nelson, Jean Carroll Nelson, Thurman Nelson, Rudolph Nelson, Sherman Nelson and George Nelson.
He is survived by: his children, Susan Lasko of West Virginia, Meda Ann Bunting of Vanceboro and Otis "Jackie" Nelson Jr. (Mary) of West Virginia; his stepchildren, Dawn Guthrie of Harkers Island, Lori Merkley (Todd) of Davis and Kenny Chadwick (Ann) of Gloucester; and his siblings, Linda Rose of Morehead City, Carolyn Lawrence of Harkers Island, Stella Guthrie (Marvin) of Beaufort, Bradford Nelson Jr. of Morehead City, Anthony Nelson Sr. (Louella) of Harkers Island and Willis Nelson Sr. (Karen) of Harkers Island. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
