He was predeceased by: his father Lloyd Herring; his wife Katie Herring; his siblings, Ellen Carlyle, Grace Sullivan, Ida Mae Wiggins, Rachel Moore, Emma Frances Jones and T. J. Herring; and his son Adrian Scott "Scotty" Warren.
He is survived by: his children, Elvin Eugene Herring (Sally Faye) of LaGrange, NC and Lynda Monacelli of Portsmouth, VA; and his sister Julia Herring Thompson of Kinston, NC. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
