He was predeceased by: his parents, Winifred and James Nelson of Ayden; and his former wife Roxanne Brohawn Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Edwards Nelson of Ayden, NC; his brother Dr. James Gregory Nelson (Nancy) of Rocky Mount, NC; his children, Paige Nelson of Wilmington, NC and Kevin Nelson Jr. of Charlotte, NC; his stepchildren, Anna Clements Centeno (Oscar Centeno) of Rockville, MD and Adam Clements of Jacksonville, NC; and his grandchildren, Alayna Pfender of Bristol, PA, Katherine and Jeff Centeno of Washington, DC. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
