He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. Sheldon Asa Saunders and Myra Aumack Saunders; and his brother Francis Stewart Saunders. He is survived by: his wife Lois Nelson Saunders; his children, Suzanne Woolard (John), Hope Hackler (Tom) of Wilmington, NC and Jay Saunders, Jr. (Linda); his niece Laura Vaughan; his nephew Robbie Saunders; and his grandchildren, John Woolard III of Mars Hill, Sheldon Woolard Peebles (Alex) of Richmond, Helen Woolard Powell (Jesse) of Wilmington and Powell Hacker (Janet) of Wilmington. He is also survived by his father's former patients, their children, and grandchildren.
