He was predeceased by: his parents, Ottis Johnston and Flona Johnston; his grandparents, James Roosevelt, Mary Ennis Johnston and Gillis Luck; his parents-in-law, Jack and Doris Smith; and his brother-in-law Bradley Scott Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Debbie Smith Johnston; his sons, Christopher Darrell Johnston (Jessica) of Asheboro and Michael Shaun Johnston (Katie); the mother of his child Barbara Beverley; his sister Linda Kivett (George "Jackie" Kivett) of Asheboro; his grandchildren, Ethan Johnston (Aliyah), Morgan Johnston, Ellie Mae Johnston, Tristan, Zade and Timothy Brower; his great grandchildren, Wynter Johnston and Xavier Brower; his sister-in-law Carole H. Smith; his uncle Jim Johnston; his aunt Geneva Goins; his niece Tonyia Johnson (Joe); his nephew Brad Smith (Melissa); and his pet Bitsy. He is also survived by several great-nephews, cousins.
