He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert George Barnwell (Bob) and Annie Sayles Barnwell; his wife Mary Frances King Barnwell; and his siblings, Bud, Beadie Morgan, Marie Stallings, Margaret Ford and Ruby Barnwell.

He is survived by: his children, Robbie Owenby of Summerton, SC, Tammy Hicks of Daytona Beach, FL and James Barnwell, Jr. (Jimmy) of Fairview. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
