He was predeceased by: his parents, George Hernes and Madeline Hernes (Sargent); his sister Marcia Thibeault; and his son-in-law Donald E. Melinsky. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Ann Hernes; his children, Heidi Parks (Gary) of New York, Laurie Salzano (Robert) of New York, Jennifer Melinsky of Michigan, Steven Mansfield (Aida) of Texas and Jodi Snyder (Robert) of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Jayni Campbell, Ally Kepler, Derek Melinsky, Kimberly DeStefano, Alexandra Mansfield, Lauren Snyder, Rachel Snyder and Erika Snyder (Maddie); his great grandchild Marin Harper Kepler; and his brother George Hernes (Betty) of Florida. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and extended family.
