He was predeceased by: his son Daryle Matthews; his father Ersie Matthews; and his brother David Matthews. He is survived by: his wife Vicky Matthews; his daughter Crystal Bunch (Nicholas); his granddaughter Skylar Elser; his mother Josie Matthews; and his siblings, Shelia Pierce, Susan Vaughan, Barbara Matthews and Dwight Matthews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Savannah Hill PFWB Church, 2176 Savannah Hill Rd, Dunn, NC 28334.
