He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Sammons and Jewell Sammons; and his wife Cynthia Jenkins Sammons. He is survived by: his son Joseph L Sammons (Jay) of Lillington; and his siblings, Edward Sammons (Nancy) of Raleigh and Karen Hindman (Kevin) of Wake Forest. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
