He was predeceased by: his parents, John Gardner and Beatrice Ennis Surles. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Matthews Surles; his daughters, Deana S. Warren (Mike) of Angier and Dawn S. Evans (Bobby) of Angier; and his grandchildren, Austin and Alexa Byrd. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
