He was predeceased by: his parents, Katie Susan "Susie" Grady Smith and Faison Smith; his former wife Linda Alphin Smith of Summerlin's Crossroads; his daughter Karen Smith Estes; his siblings, LouGene Smith Hemphill and William Aaron Smith; his brother-in-law James Hemphill; and his nephews, Jimmy Hemphill and Dan Hemphill (Betty Boone).
He is survived by: his daughters, Kimberly Smith Todd and Katrina Smith Muirhead of Clayton, NC; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn Todd Driver, Kara Todd Bass (Collins) of Clayton, NC, Kristin Klaire Estes of Youngsville, NC and Rockford Faison Reck of Raleigh, NC; his great grandchildren, Waylon Vann Driver and Clint Brooks Driver of Clayton, NC.; and his sister-in-law Olivia Smith of Albertson, NC. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
