He was predeceased by: his parents, Swink Thompson and Lucy Thompson; his brother Marvin "Jack" Thompson; his daughter Wendy Dennis; and his granddaughter Tangi Stamper.
He is survived by: his wife Martha Furr Thompson; his children, Grover Thompson of Locust, Laura T. Troutman of New London and Ellen M. Gaskins of Locust; and his siblings, Ronnie Thompson of Albemarle and Hazel T. Smith of Albemarle. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
