He was predeceased by: his parents, Clayton Steen and Charlotte Steen. He is survived by: his wife Sadie T. Steen; his son Clayton Joseph Steen Jr. (Ellen) of Ellerbe; his stepdaughter Kimberly Stotesbury; his siblings, Elaine Mizzell of Charleston, SC and Reese Steen of Mars Hill; and his granddaughters, Cheri Ginder and Amber Harley. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.
