He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, John Smith and Ruth Hall Smith; his wife Janice Harrell Smith; his sons, James Smith (Eva), Joseph Smith (Zina), David Smith (Sharon), Reginald Smith (Carol), Darryl Smith, Melvin Smith (Kim) and Joe N. Smith Jr.; and his siblings, Mary Frances Saunders of Elizabeth City, NC, Ella Ruth Smith of Gates County, Elsie Ward of Gates County and George Smith of Plainfield. He was also cherished by grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
