He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Marion Hanson; his parents, Cecil and Chrystle (Bev); his children, Cheryl Borden (Jack), Brian Gidley, Susan Matson (Will) and Craig Gidley (MaryJo); and his stepchildren, Doug Carlson (Jean), Debbie Jones (Mark) and Larry Carlson (Gail). He was also cherished by 11 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren and numerous extended family.

“Susan, Will, and family, your dad was an amazing man. In addition to being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he had numerous friends in his church and communities far and wide. I knew him as a fellow elementary principal and close friend in The Tacoma School District for many years. Mel was deeply admired by his principal colleagues, to say nothing of the 1000's of students, staffs, and parents who were touched by his smile, dedication and caring for them.”
