He was predeceased by: his parents, Margaret Koten (Hanson) and Earl Van Koten; and his daughter Valerie Van Koten. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Van Koten; his daughters, Melanie (Joseph Eve) and Stephanie (Brent Hinger); and his grandchildren, Dustin, Miranda and Jacques.
