John B. Mathers Jr. Obituary
Sadly missed by family and friends John Jr. passed away June 28, 2023, at the Elkhorn Rehab Center, Clancy Montana. Formerly a resident of Mobile Al. and owner/operator of Overlook Furniture Co.
John graduated from McGill High School and attended Springhill and Belhaven college.
From childhood John had a tremendous appreciation of classical literature, science fiction, world history and music. He owned a substantial collection of all. He was a very descriptive writer of short stories poetry. He volunteered with local theaters and performed on stage in many theatrical productions. He also loved to sing and was a member of the Cathedral Choir.
John enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Hospital Corpsman with the Marines during Vietnam Conflict. He was affectionately called " Doc" by his fellow servicemen.
John's favorite pastimes were fishing and taking long walks, reading and listening to his music, and playing with his children.
John was proceeded in death by his mother Laura Camp Mathers and his father John B. Mathers (Ruth Gaynell) and is survived by Joan Hurley Mathers, their four children, Valerie Ellers, John. B. Mathers III, Susan K. Norris (Jason) and William Brian Mathers, five grandchildren, three great-grand children. He also leaves a brother, J. Glenn Mathers (Kathy) and sisters, Glenda Mathers Meredith (Bill) and Ruth Carolyn Mathers Provost (Michael), other relatives and friends.
John was known for his humor, his kindness and empathy for his fellow man.
