He was predeceased by: his parents, Stefanie Zankowski and Joseph Zankowski; his grandson Brandon Root; his brother Adolf Zankowski; and his sons-in-law, Mike Root and Mark Holzer.
He is survived by: his children, Donna Root, Laurie Holzer, Michael Zankowski (Traci), Anne Zankowski and Heidi Christensen (Dave); his stepchildren, Kenny Young, Ray Young, Dennis Young (Laura) and Michelle Young-Clark; his wife Marcia Zankowski; his sister Elisabeth Reifenauer of Linz, Austria; and his grandchildren, Samantha Perkins (Troy), Jessica Masters (A. J.), Kiersten Bishop (Bill), Bradley Christensen (Leeza), Taylor Kuehn (Josh), Alyssa Scott, Emilee Scott and Wilhelm Scott. He is also survived by four stepchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.
