He was predeceased by: his parents, Grace Bates and Avery Bates. He is survived by: his wife Sherry Kay Bates (Van Arsdale); his children, Deborah Finkbeiner and Dan Bates (Nancy); and his brothers, Virgil and Gary Bates. He is also survived by five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
