He was predeceased by: his parents, Ola D. Hay Waites and Vander Waites; his siblings, Tommy Waites, Huey Waites, Pete Waites and Lila Smith; and his son-in-law Roger Colvin.

He is survived by: his wife Silvia Hager Waites; his children, Lourelia Alice Waites Pryor (David) of Clinton, Mississippi, LaDonna Sue Waites Crotwell (Tony) of Pelahatchie, Mississippi and Van Voss Waites (Shelby) of Madison, Mississippi; his grandson Jonathan Colvin (Hannah) of Olive Branch, Mississippi; his children, Beth Anne Colvin Travis (Chris) of Bryant, Arkansas, Eric Nicholas Crotwell of Pelahatchie, Mississippi, Victoria Crawford Griffin (Corey) of Lena, Mississippi and Cole Avery Waites of Madison, Mississippi; and his sister-in-law Elaine Waites. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren.

In 2003, Bernard was initiated into the Mississippi Hall of Fame and recognized by the Mississippi Economic Council's M.B. Swazye Educational Foundation for being chosen by his students as Star Teacher for ten years.
