He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Holmes, Sr. and Ruby Faye Shaw Duncan; and his son-in-law James "Boo" Franks. He is survived by: his wife Janice Duncan of West Point; his daughters, Karen Pounders of West Point and Kim Jones of West Point; his grandchildren, Alissa Loden (Austin) of Amory, Brittney Houk (Justin) of Amory, Colton Moffett of Amory and Jaide Jones (Dalton) of West Point; his great grandchildren, Addyson Houk, Branion Loden, Brylynne Houk, Jayden Alexander, Amelia Loden, Vadie Ann Brown, Griffey Holmes Loden and Layla Pearl Loden; his siblings, Glenda Deal (Hoyt) of Chattanooga and Jesse Duncan (Cathy) of Columbus; and his siblings-in-law, Bonnie Sue Jenkins of Wren, Robert Clyde Buchanan (Mary Lee) of Wren and Mark Buchanan (Bonnie) of Athens.
