He was predeceased by: his parents, James Edward Gardner and Beatrice Brown Gardner; his former wife Mary Evelyn Gardner; and his brothers, Garland and Lavelle Gardner.

He is survived by: his wife Jeanette Weems Gardner; his brothers, Mike and Jackie Gardner; his children, Michael Gilbert, Tom Gardner (Kathy Gardner) and Lesa Pigg (Dewane Pigg); and his grandchildren, Brandy Gilbert, Brooke Gilbert, Megan Gilbert, Tyler Gardner, Collin Gardner, Zach Coats and Katie Coats. He is also survived by great-grandchildren and extended family.
