He was predeceased by: his wife Sara Ellis Bates; his parents, James V. Bates, Sr. and Mary Vaughn Lee Bates; his sister Annie Laurie Bates Miller; his sister-in-law Nellie Hill Bates; and his nephew Brandon Bates.
He is survived by: his brothers, John David, Andrew Thompkins "Tommy" Bates (Mae) of Petal, Donald Edward Bates (Wanda) of Petal, Elliot Bythel Bates of Rawls Springs and Larry Turner Bates (Iddie); and his brother-in-law Mike Miller of Moselle. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
