He was predeceased by: his parents, John Dexter and Bertha Stockstill Patterson; his wife Patricia Patterson; his sister Billie Joyce Lawrence; and his great grandchild Bryce Harper Sims.

He is survived by: his daughters, Diane Nicolosi (Ken), Cathy Johnson (Chris) and Linda Simmons (J. J.); his grandchildren, Brittany Sims (Colton), Brandan Evans, Tayler Vercher (John) and Sarah Patterson (Shane); his great grandchildren, Annaleah Katherine Sims and Harper Grace Sims; his sister Luvenia Juanita Brooks; and his adoptive daughters, Pam Lewis and Karen Lott.
