He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert H. Bates, Sr. and Barbara Hartley Bates; his sister Patricia Stepp; and his nephew Larry Bates, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Jacquelyn "Jackie" Fennell Bates; his children, Brandy Jones (Justin), Stephanie McMahon (Ryan), Robert H. "Beau" Bates, III (Ryan) and Amber Allen (Lance); his brother Larry K. Bates (K. C.); and his grandchildren, Halle, Hannah Jones, Liam, Parker Kate McMahon, Anderson, Porter, Reed and Marigny Bates. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, God children.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to the St. Thomas Catholic Church "Chiller Fund" or the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 720 E Beach Blvd, Long Beach, 39560.
