He was predeceased by: his wife Betty Bates; his parents, Thurman Bates and Lucille Bates; and his siblings, Henry Bates, J. L. Bates and Barbara Creel.
He is survived by: his children, John Wayne Bates (Kelly) of Ovett, Buddy Allen Bates of Ovett and Lucinda Maxcey Bates of Laurel; his grandchildren, Shane Bates of Columbia, Johnny Bates of Bassfield, Jonathan Bates of Laurel, Colby Maxcey of Laurel and Hunter Maxcey of Laurel; and his brother Eulle Bates (Sue) of Richton. He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren.
