He is survived by: his wife Gloria Jean Atherton; his children, Denlyn Atherton (Boston), Joe Atherton (Wendy) and Jacquelyn "Jackie" Burgess; his siblings, Minnie Evelyn Gill, Betty Louise Knight, Tommy Ray Atherton and Danny Austin Atherton; his grandchildren, Colton Ray Atherton, Hannah Michelle Burgess, Dalton Skelton and Dustin Skelton; and his great grandchildren, Sawyer Skelton, Cash Junge and Maddox Skelton.
The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
