He was predeceased by: his parents, Elizabeth Jones and Edward Bernard; his wife Bertha Bernard; his siblings, Ellen King, Dumas Hawkins, Roosevelt Hoggatt, Robert Jackson, John Bernard and James Bernard; his daughter Valerie Bernard; and his son-in-law Rev. Carl A. Smith.

He is survived by: his daughters, Brenda Ford Smith, Janice Bernard Sago, Sandra Bernard Williams and Shelia Bernard McGee; and his siblings, Charles Matthews and Eva Smith. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
