He was predeceased by: his parents, Larken Smith and Estelle Anderson Smith. He is survived by: his wife Judy Thornton Smith; his sons, Mark (Deborah) and Jason (Ashley); his brothers, James Smith of Moss and Lon Smith of Laurel; and his grandchildren, Mason, Lauren, Katie, Joshua and Caroline. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
