He was predeceased by: his parents, James W. Smith and Elizabeth Freeman Smith; and his grandchild Asher Riette. He is survived by: his wife Shana Smith; his children, James M. Smith, Hannah Smith Riette (Jason) and Katelyn Smith Freeman (Dalton); his grandchildren, Elijah Riette, Layla "Lizzie" Freeman, Abigail Riette and Gabriel Freeman; and his siblings, Billy Smith (Rosario), Kristi Miller (Eric) and Angela Bamburg (Robert). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
