He was predeceased by: his daughter Mary Diedrich Shanks Olson; his parents, Claude Henry Shanks and Betty Diedrich Shanks; and his brother Claude Henry Shanks, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Donna Y. Shanks; his daughter Parrish Shanks Malouf (Justin); his granddaughters, Lily Marie Malouf and Mary Betty Malouf; and his son-in-law Matthew Olson.
