He is survived by: his wife Sallie Trussell Carpenter; his mother Frances Nail Hunter of Sumter, SC; his children, Lyndi Carpenter Rives (Scott) of Madison and James H. "Jay" Carpenter, Jr. of Oxford; his brothers, Timothy and Jeff Hunter of Sumter, SC; his grandchildren, Walker and Emily Rives of Madison; and his aunt Willie Paul DuBois of Grenada.
